“Speak Out” is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.
Parents, have you finished your homework assignment?
Last month, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools created a survey seeking parents’ input on how students should be assigned to the schools they ultimately attend.
CMS seeks to increase the student diversity of its classrooms throughout the district.
They hope to provide children with broader exposure to individuals from different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
But first, they want to hear from the community about how they should achieve those goals.
For example, how far is too far to ride a bus to the school of your choice?
And what’s more important, class size or curriculum options?
These are important questions and we think getting parent input is a great idea.
But this idea won't work if we don’t all speak out and share our opinions with the school system.
If there is low participation or not enough representation from all the families who make up CMS, how can things change for the better?
The deadline is February 22nd, but we encourage you to complete the survey today.
Visit the CMS website or wbtv.com for a link to the survey, or call your child’s school to get a paper copy.
