CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A Charlotte lawyer, and former University of North Carolina Board of Governors chairman, is speaking out after he was arrested Thursday with a gun in his bag at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report, John Fennebresque was arrested Thursday morning around 10 a.m.

Fennebresque reportedly had a S&W 380 pistol with him when he tried to go through the security checkpoint at the airport. He was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on city property, which is a misdemeanor.

Fennebresque is a partner at the McGuireWoods law firm in Charlotte.

WBTV obtained a statement from Fennebresque Thursday evening about his arrest.

"I took my wife and three adult children to a gun range Sunday for private classes necessary for them to obtain concealed weapons permits," Fennebresque said. "Because I have a concealed carry permit, I brought four handguns in my briefcase for them to use at the range. I removed the guns from the briefcase and put them back in my gun safe when I returned home, but unwittingly missed one."

That's when he says authorities at the Charlotte airport discovered the handgun in his briefcase as he prepared to go on vacation with his wife.

"This is an embarrassing mistake and I alone am to blame for it," he said.

Fennebresque was released on a $500 bond.
