LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) -

A Lancaster County man is charged in the death of his mother, deputies said Thursday.

Robert Allen Hypes, 36, is charged with murder in the shooting death of his 57-year-old mother, Carolyn Marie Taurino.

Taurino was found dead in her home on Flat Creek Road, deputies say.

Wednesday, deputies went to a bank in Kershaw for a suspicious man, later identified as Hypes, who went in and made inquiries about Taurino. Deputies then went to Taurino's home for more information but got no response.

A red 2003 Ford Econoline van was captured in surveillance photos leaving the bank that day.

Around 3:30 p.m., deputies saw the suspect vehicle, owned by Taurino, traveling on East Hilton Street. Officers pulled the van over and say Hypes was the only person in the van.

After talking to Hypes, deputies obtained Taurino's sister's contact information.

Deputies called Taurino's sister, who said she had not talked to Taurino in awhile. She told deputies Taurino was wheelchair bound and asked that they check on her.

After getting no response for a second time, deputies entered Taurino's home around 5 p.m. She was found dead on the floor near a bedroom doorway, officials say.

Taurino died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to an autopsy. Officials at the scene said it appeared Taurino had been dead for some time before they found her.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office at 803-283-3388 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
