DNA test connects young woman with father she never knew

Jamie Nader has no doubt there's a guiding force behind the developments over the last four months of her life.

"There's no denying God was in this.  Just the timing of it.  I am completely convinced God was whispering to me," Nader told WBTV.

Her search for her father has been life-long.  At times she has felt close to an answer.  At other times she was frustrated to be so far away from learning the truth.

Until recently.

In September of 2015 she took a $99 Ancestry DNA test.  Nader simply wanted a few answers.

"I'm just this mixed kid growing up in a white family and no one knows what I am or who my father is.  It is hard not knowing.  I just wanted to feel like I belong somewhere.  I expected to find my race and that would get me closer to finding the answer but I didn't think it was going to give me the answer," Nader said.

The test showed she is of African decent and it gave her one more gift.  It connected her with other people, people with her similar genetic makeup, who had also taken a test.  One woman, a close match, appeared to me a cousin or aunt.  She reached out and after three attempts, heard back.

"I think she just didn't know what to make of it because it is kind of a lot to swallow," Nader said.

First they messaged on Facebook, sent text messages, then there was a phone call that lasted hours.  After that, this woman called her brother.

"The first thing he said was that he was in the same city at the same time as my mom," Nader said.

"It just shows the power of a DNA test.  It unlocks stories we want to see for ourselves and it is so priceless because you don't know what you will find until you take the test and start on the path," said Anna Swayne with Ancestry DNA.

For Nader it was a 30 year mystery seemingly solved in a matter of months.  She took the test in September, by November she tracked down the man she now says she knows is her dad, and in December they met for the first time.

"The first thing he said was I'm trying not to knock over all these people because he just wanted to leap across and give me a hug as soon as he saw me.  The next thing he said was 'look at you' and I said 'look at you!'" Nader shared.

While he hasn't taken a DNA test for himself to prove he is her father, when she looks at him and talks with him Nader says she's sure he is.

"I didn't feel like my story was done.  I had strong instincts I wasn't done with my story and I'm glad i didn't give up on that," Nader said.

Jamie got two brothers and a large extended family out of the new relationship and her dad got four beautiful new granddaughters.
