Afternoon showers expected in Charlotte area ahead of colder weather, Winter Weather Advisory in mountains

A strong upper level low pressure center will roll on top of the Carolinas starting today. Expect showers to pop up across the region this afternoon, except the mountains, where it will be snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the mountains today with 1" - 3" expected. It doesn't stop there though.  A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday night through Thursday morning with snow totals hitting 4" - 8" by midweek. Dangerously cold, sub-zero wind chills will arrive during the week as well, so stay alert if you live in the high country.

Outside of the mountains, colder air will continue to filter into the entire area this week, although it should be mainly dry outside of the mountains after today.  This will rank among the coldest air we've seen all winter.
