MONROE, NC (WBTV) -

A Monroe Police officer accused of driving while impaired is on unpaid administrative leave, police said Friday.

Around 6:50 p.m. Thursday, Monroe Police went to a medical call on Roosevelt Boulevard for someone in their vehicle. Officer Darren Nash, 34, was found impaired behind the wheel, police say.

Officials took Nash to the Union County Jail for an Intoxilyzer test. Police say Nash refused the test and was charged with DWI.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in court May 11.

“As police officers, we are all human, but we are held to higher standards than those we serve. This is an unfortunate incident that is not a direct reflection of our department and the level of service we provide. We will not treat this investigation any differently and are committed to ensuring justice is served,” Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gillard.

Nash is on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Nash has been an officer with the city of Monroe since November 2008.
