Student claims sexual assault by trio inside App State dormitory

BOONE, NC (WBTV) -

An Appalachian State University student says she was sexually assaulted by three men after returning from an off-campus party early Sunday morning.

The student went to university police around 6:45 a.m. Sunday and said she was assaulted several hours earlier. She was reportedly returning to campus from an off-campus party when she was assaulted by three male students from the party while in a campus residence hall.

University Police are investigating the incident and are interviewing all parties involved.

University Police Chief Gunther Doerr said his officers have examined the dorm room, collected evidence, and have interviewed several people. They are wanting to know more about the party off campus and what transpired there. They do believe alcohol may have been a factor.

Investigators also said they have the names of those allegedly involved, but no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.

Results of the investigation including lab test results will be turned over the the District Attorney's office. Officials there will determine  whether warrants will be issued.

In the meantime, Dean of Students J.J. Brown is encouraging students to watch out for each other and report anything they feel authorities should know about.

"We want our students to be safe," he said.

The university has several programs to aid students and to keep them informed.  He says students should always be aware of their surroundings so as not to put them in compromising situations. He added, "If you see something, say something!"
