CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Winter weather in the Carolinas is affecting businesses in Charlotte ahead of this weekend's NFC Championship weekend.

Restaurants and bars were expected to be busy and full of football fans showing up for Sunday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and the Phoenix Cardinals, but snow and ice are impacting events connected to the game.

Friday afternoon’s outdoor pep rally was cancelled and most major airlines canceled flights into and out of the Charlotte airport.

At Charlotte Douglas International, security check points were closed, ticket counters were unstaffed, and all flights cancelled.

Football fans from Arizona are having problems getting to Charlotte.

Travel agents like Rebecca Johns of Creative Travel say that fans are scrambling to find airline seats to get here for the Panthers and Cardinals match up.

“I have a client who is supposed to be on the red eye from Los Angeles to Charlotte for the game and his flight was canceled." she said. "However, they rebooked him on a 6:30 flight tomorrow morning, he’ll  be here at 3:45."

The combination of ice and snow has also impacted the hotel industry in the Carolina’s largest city.

During the playoff weekend, many hotels were booked to capacity, but stranded visitors now means those in the tourism are hanging a new sign that says 'space available.'
