American Airlines plans to restart operations Saturday

American Airlines says they plan to restart limited operations Saturday.

As of Friday afternoon, the airline said they plan to start back up again around noon on January 23. Customers still need to check the status of their flights all weekend as some flights may be delayed or canceled.

A majority of the major airlines have canceled all flights into and out of the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport for Friday due to concerns of ice that is expected to hit the area. American Airlines, Regionals, Delta, United, Southwest, Lufthansa, Air Canada, ViaAir and JetBlue canceled all operations Friday.

"None of these decisions are made lightly, but really for Charlotte, that issue is freezing rain," Katie Cody with American Airlines said Thursday, following the flight cancellation.

The airport will be open with limited airfield operation. Checkpoint A is open to the public through 10:45 p.m.

Passengers are urged to contact their airline regarding their flight status before leaving for the airport.

American says the weather will "significantly impact our operations over the next several days." But they hope flights will resume Saturday morning.

"Our updated travel policy now covers 42 airports and allows customers whose travel plans are impacted to rebook without penalty," airline officials said. "Email notifications have been sent to all of our impacted customers, informing them of the waiver. They will also receive another communication if their flight is canceled. We are also working to ensure aircraft do not remain overnight at airports that are forecast to receive this extreme winter weather."

Customers whose flights are canceled can request a refund or reschedule their travel on by retrieving their reservation. Customers may also contact American Airlines reservations at +1-800-433-7300 in the U.S. or Canada.
