LAKE PARK, NC (WBTV) - An employee at a nursing home in Union County is being charged after investigators say he sexually assaulted an elderly woman who suffers from dementia.
Douglas Steven Little, 60, was arrested and charged with second degree forcible sex offense, sexual act by a private institution employee/custodian, and a crime against nature.
Officials at the Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Services on Faith Church Road told investigators that an employee witnessed Little, a certified nursing assistant, sexually assault a patient around 3:30 Wednesday morning.
The manager at the facility said they began an immediate investigation and contacted the Union County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were called to the facility Wednesday morning around 7 a.m. Investigators say they collected evidence and interviewed people.
The alleged victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment. She reportedly suffers from dementia and was incapable of defending herself, investigators say.
WBTV talked with one of Little's relatives Wednesday afternoon. They said the charges are incomprehensible, and that he never showed any signs that he was capable of doing what he is accused of.
Family members of other residents said they haven't had any issues at Lake Park.
"It's been great," said James Pagoota. "I haven't had any problems at all with this place. All the people are great. Mom loves it."
Little worked at the facility for about 13 years. He is being held on a $200,000 bond and will be in Union County District Court February 8.
