GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

A Gaston County toddler has died nearly a week after police say she was struck by a car in Gastonia in a hit and run.

The hit-and-run happened around 11 a.m. last Wednesday in the 1400 block of Westbrook Circle. One-year-old Riley Bradley was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center, then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center before being moved to Levine Children's Hospital, where she was treated for nearly a week.

According to a statement posted on a Facebook page created for the toddler, "the family would like to thank everyone for their love.. And prayers. Riley is with Jesus now."

Police say the Riley's mother was busy inside the house when the toddler wandered off. They are still investigating and asking questions as to how that happened.

According to police, officers have located the car and the driver believed to be involved around the corner from the accident scene. The car was towed away. A neighbor's dashcam camera was rolling at the time of the hit and run and caught the car in the neighborhood moments before the accident.

They have questioned the driver of the car and say charges are expected. Police believe the driver is not a flight risk.

Kim Johnson, a close family friend, said Riley died around noon Tuesday.

“This precious little girl (was) sweet, full of energy and life, and she touched a lot of people,” said Johnson.

Johnson said she has known the family for years and has been trying to help them during such a difficult time.

“I’ve never had anyone this close to me, something like this happen,” explained Johnson. “Its very tragic.”

Neighbors across the block told WBTV they have kept the family in their prayers this past week.

“It’s a little girl that hasn’t lived her life yet, and it’s just terrible. It’s devastating,” said neighbor Claudia Cardona.

Johnson said the family has not yet made funeral arrangements for Riley.

A GoFundMe page was recently set up for Bradley by her sister.
