WBTV Speak Out Editorial: The Digital World is not "Real Life"

“Speak Out” is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.

Remember the world “before” the internet? A generation of Americans don’t.

Today’s kids have never even known a world without social media.

A world where you can easily create a rosy virtual reality.

You can choose to share only your best photos…best times…best friends.

You can instantly measure your popularity by the number of “likes” you get on your latest Facebook post…

Or on the number of people who are following you on Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat.

This virtual world is addictive.

Tell me the last time you saw a teenager who wasn’t buried in his or her smart phone.

But is growing up “online” setting our children up for a big reality check down the road?

What happens when they need to conduct a real conversation or find ways to resolve conflict with those who don’t agree with their point of view?

Will they have the skills, attention span and discipline to compete successfully in the business world?

Will they have the vision, acumen and judgment to become our next great leaders?

Many of you are thinking “generation gap.”  Our parents probably had similar concerns about us…and their parents about them.

And perhaps these technological advances will in the end bring more good than bad to our society and the world.

But we hope the value of true “human connections” will never get lost in this digital world.

P.S.  If YOU happen to be seeing this editorial online or on your phone, don’t just forward it to your kids.

Take a minute and talk it over with them. It might do both of you a world of good.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
