LINCOLN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

About a dozen people gathered in an impound lot behind the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Monday afternoon.

The agency was holding an auction to get rid of some unclaimed items currently in their possession.

“It helps clear some of our property out so we can have more room to put other items as they come in,” explained Captain Tim Johnson of the sheriff’s office.

Johnson said that all the money collected during the auction would be turned over to the local school system. On Monday the agency was getting rid of a 1991 Honda Accord, a Yamaha 350 Grizzly ATV, and a SpongeBob SquarePants wallet, among other things.

Johnson said a lot of the items were once part of investigations, and some of the other belongings were found by citizens and simply never claimed by the rightful owners.

Iron Station resident Bobby Cothran purchased a number of items at the event, including the rundown Honda.

“I just enjoy it,” said Cothran about the auction. “It’s my community.”

Johnson said the sheriff’s office was able to sell every item on their list at Monday’s auction. He said they try to hold the events several times a year.

“It’s time-consuming, aggravating, but just part of the job,” said Johnson about the auction.
