Molly's Kids: Huntersville teenager Grace Haynes dies after 22-month battle with bone cancer

Grace Haynes is loved by many of you.

After a 22-month battle with osteosarcoma, Grace died this past Monday night around 9pm at Levine Children's Hospital.

Since then dozens of you have written loving messages making sure I knew our Charlotte community lost this strong 14-year-old who fought not just for herself, but for all kids battling pediatric cancer. She would post pictures from her hospital bed, holding signs like the one you see here >>

Sometimes it was to celebrate a personal milestone, other times her messages were to make the point pediatric cancer needs more research and funding.

Grace was getting radiotherapy on her brain. A few months ago she had a massive stroke. She proved doctors wrong by recovering… only to have three other strokes follow. The final one was two weeks ago.

Grace’s mom and stepfather – Yvonne and Sean – live in Huntersville with her 5-year-old brother Colin. Grace’s dad, Lee, is in Lincolnton.

I spoke with Lee last night after our 11pm news. He said the whole family is hurting, but they’re appreciative of the support people are sending. He said they are all grateful so many people care.

In lieu of flowers, the family wants everyone to know they'll soon establish the “Amazing Grace Foundation” – which Grace wanted – to help local kids fighting pediatric cancer AND to raise money for pediatric cancer research. That was really important to this young girl who said not enough was being done for the type of cancer that attacked her own body. She often talked about awareness for osteosarcoma.

In honor of Grace, here’s a quick link chock-full of information on this bone cancer >>

Arrangements are as follows:
- Thursday, December 17th, Visitation. 7pm-9pm. Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton. 125 Dave Warlick Drive
- Friday, December 18th, Funeral. 1pm. Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton. Burial to follow.
- Saturday, December 19th, “Celebration of Life”. 11am. First Church Charlotte. 4929 Sharon Amity Road.

This photo is beautiful.

Big thoughts to the many of you looking at it this morning, knowing you’ll miss her deeply.
