“Speak Out” is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.
Attacks on innocent people in Paris, random shootings in schools and movie theatres, and now the mass murders in San Bernardino linked to radicalism.
It seems as if every other week there is another senseless act of violence in our world, and the question becomes, “How do we move forward and live our lives?”
Now just recently, President Obama addressed U.S. citizens, urging us not to be afraid, as this would be playing into the hands of terrorists.
The reality is, we are afraid and we’re afraid of what the future holds for our country and our children…
And we’re afraid that this is the new norm.
Now we live in a chaotic world, made even more disconcerting by the deluge of information, news, and social media.
They give us in-your-face doses of violence, bloodshed, and terror. It would be easy to just throw up our hands and surrender.
While this may seem a new phenomenon, many of us can remember similar sentiments shared by our parents, and their parents.
Chaos, uncertainty, acts of terror and violence have been present since our nation’s founding.
So, what do we do? Do we give up? Do we stay at home? Do we cower in fear?
That’s exactly what terrorists – foreign and domestic – are hoping for.
But that’s not OUR America. This IS “the land of the free…the home of the brave.”
Live your life. Enjoy your freedom a nd don’t let anyone take away your liberty.
