Game 2 at NC State look like game 1... A FIRST HALF BLOWOUT!
Shelby came out on a mission in the 2A state title game. They took a 36-0 lead before Kinston even knew they were in a football game.
3rd play of the game and 20 seconds in, Darquez Lee connected with Shelby's all time leading receiver Jayden Borders and he went 80 yards for the TD and it never got better for the Vikings.
Lee finished the first half with 230 passing yards and 4 TD to 4 different receivers.
The Shelby defense forced 2 turnovers, 2 sacks, and 5 tackles for loss in the half.
Shelby was a TD away from forcing a running clock in the first half and as I said in the 4AA title game where Mallard Creek would get to 42-0 and the running clock, no state championship football game should ever have a running clock. It is suppose to be the best vs the best. Not sure that was the case tonight.
Kinston is the defending and 4 time 2A champs in basketball and at this point, their minds are on that possible 5th title. Football is the last thing they are wanting to play in the 2nd half down 36-6.
The only question in the 2nd half would be could Shelby ever get the game to the point of the running clock and the answer was yes after a 4th quarter pick six from Damien Key to make it 57-13.
Final score tonight was Shelby 57 and Kinston 21.
Shelby wins their 3rd straight state title as they become the first program in Cleveland County to pull that feat and only the third 2A program in the state of North Carolina to do that.
And the future is bright for Shelby as the most outstanding defensive player of the game was sophomore LB Dax Hollifield and the most outstanding offensive player was sophomore RB Xavier Brooks.
The MVP of the game was senior QB Darquez Lee who threw for 256 yards and 5 TD.
Congrats to coach Lance Ware and the Shelby Golden Lions!
