BLOG: Pancake breakfast fundraiser a huge success

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

“An incredible success!” “Remarkable generosity.” Some of the terms I heard describe the inaugural Charity Pancake Breakfast at The Fig Tree Restaurant benefiting Assistance League of Charlotte.

Saturday morning, Executive Chef Greg Zanitsch served his mother's pancake recipe, along with eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice. One hundred and seventy-five guests came to eat, but at one point they were so busy I’m told they had to stop counting. I brought my mother to the event. We arrived early Saturday and the place was already packed.

The event raised over $2,500 that will go directly to the Assistance League’s Operation School Bell. The program gives new school uniforms, shoes, winter coats and toiletries to kids in need in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

Diners were given the option to make a $10 donation, or bring a new child’s winter coat, and some chose to do both. They collected forty new winter coats, so many the transport SUV was almost overflowing.

I spoke with Susan Brackett Saturday, she said they were just overjoyed by the turnout. The Fig Tree Restaurant staff all volunteered their time, even Santa and one of his elves made a stop to hear what kids wanted for Christmas.

Hats off to all the Assistance League volunteers who work so hard to run the 100% volunteer organization. And a big thank you to Sara and Greg Zanitsch for opening their hearts and their beautiful restaurant for such a wonderful cause. Glad to hear The Fig Tree is already planning to host the event again next year, the food was delicious.
