BLOG: One of Charlotte's finest restaurants helps local kids

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Some of my favorite ‘Mo’s Heroes’ are teaming up with one of my favorite restaurants to fill bellies with a yummy pancake breakfast and fill bags with new children’s winter coats. The Fig Tree Restaurant is partnering with the incredibly dedicated Assistance League of Charlotte for its inaugural pancake breakfast for charity this Saturday, December 5th.

For a minimum donation of $10 per person (cash/check), OR a new children’s winter coat, you will get a full breakfast. Executive Chef Greg Zanitsch will be making his mother's pancake recipe. Eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice will also be served.

“We wanted to find a way to help children and invite the community into the restaurant for the holidays. Assistance League of Charlotte is the perfect match,” according to Sara Zanitsch, the chef’s wife, co-owner and general manager of The Fig Tree Restaurant.

Breakfast begins at 9:00am and ends at Noon. Make sure to bring the kids. In addition to breakfast in the historic home, children will be able to visit with Santa Claus.

All of the proceeds from breakfast will go to Assistance League of Charlotte’s Operation School Bell, which provides basic school clothing and books to children in need in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. I have witnessed first-hand for many years, how this amazing Assistance League program enhances kids’ self-esteem, which we know promotes learning and encourages regular school attendance.

Zantisch went on to say, “The organization does an amazing job providing necessities such as coats, clothing and school supplies to local children. We hope to have a good turnout to support the Assistance League of Charlotte, and turn the charity breakfast into a holiday tradition."

I’ll be joining volunteers from Assistance League of Charlotte at The Fig Tree Restaurant Saturday. Volunteers will make sure to provide you with tax receipts for your donations.

The Fig Tree Restaurant will be running on an all-volunteer staff (meaning every part of this event is volunteer- and charity-based)!

“The Assistance League of Charlotte is so incredibly grateful to The Fig Tree Restaurant for this event. When Greg and Sara reached out to us several months ago, we were elated that such a fantastic restaurant wanted to help local children in need through our organization and Operation School Bell," a very grateful Susan Brackett, President, Assistance League said.

Reservations are not required, but the restaurant is taking them. Call (704) 332-3322 with your party’s information. The Fig Tree Restaurant is located at 1601 East 7th Street, just outside of Uptown.
