Students at Charlotte middle school sick after taking medication not prescribed to them

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Several students were sent to the hospital Tuesday after ingesting a medication at a Charlotte middle school, according to officials.

The incident happened at Whitewater Middle School, on the 10200 block of Running Rapids Road in northwest Charlotte.

A Connect5 message was sent to parents alerting them of what happened.

"This is Principal Beth Thompson. Today, a few students ingested a medication that was not prescribed to them that caused illness," the message read. "Those students have been evaluated; some have been transported as a precautionary measure."

The message concluded, "I want to assure you that your child’s safety is of the upmost importance to us. Please caution your children about taking unknown substances. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school."

Officials have not said how many students were involved.

There is no word on what kind of medication the students ingested or where they obtained it.
