In case you didn’t notice, there are elves serving up the hot pastrami sandwiches at Charlotte’s iconic New York style Phil’s Deli at Strawberry Hill shopping center in southeast Charlotte. They’re serving breakfast and lunch with a heaping side of real Christmas spirit!

For the last several years, Amy Colpitts and her mom and dad, Denise and Phil Levine, have made sure kids in need feel truly special at Christmas. They sponsor kids from local children’s homes, area schools, as well as the foster care system.

Something touched Amy’s heart a few years back and I remember when that first Christmas tree popped up by the door at Phil’s. Hanging on the tree, little angels and all their Christmas "wish lists." It’s grown every year, and every year the people who consider Phil’s Deli a second home rise to the occasion.

"With the help of our wonderful customers, and local churches we meet the needs of hundreds of children over the holiday season.” Almost 450 kids will be able to open gifts and get a new warm winter coat this year. But this year the need is greater because one coat donation didn’t come through. Amy is asking for the community’s help because she’s witnessed what joy it brings.

“They (the kids) all get to put their wish list on a little angel. We just depend on those who come and eat here to pick a child to sponsor, and show a child who might be in a tough spot, they’re special, just like every child wants to feel special on Christmas day,” Amy said.

They have a Christmas party for each organization they help. Santa always makes time in his busy schedule to show up and make the kids giggle with joy. Of course the elves are there giving out the gifts, and desserts.

“This is when we realize just how much we have left to do. Right now we’re asking people drop off unwrapped toys, gloves, hats, socks, diapers, kids coats, just about anything little ones could use. But in order for us to get these wonderful gifts to the kids, we need them here by December 15th. So we’re asking if anyone is looking for a great way to give back, we’d love your help in making Christmas wishes come true,” Amy said adding, “Thank you to every person who helps us make sure these children experience the joy!”

Phil’s Deli is located in the Strawberry Hill Shopping Center on the Fresh Market side. They are accepting unwrapped gifts and taking them to Santa’s sleigh every day between now and December 15th, from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday – Sunday.

I recommend while you’re dropping of gifts and a coat, you order the hot turkey Rueben. It’s the best I’ve ever eaten. And as about Denise’s banana pudding! Thank you in advance for considering this wonderful cause.
