Couple builds special home to display 9,000+ Santas

CONCORD, NC (WBTV) -

There is no such thing as too many Santas. That line might be Judy and Ron Barnhardt’s motto.

The Concord couple has amassed a collection of more than 9,000 St. Nicholas statues, figurines, dolls, ornaments, pictures and pretty much anything else you can imagine that can be made into a Santa.

“In 1987 I bought one Santa and I painted him and I really enjoyed that,” Judy said. That’s how her collection began. The paint-yourself figurine actually turned out pretty decent so Judy decided she really liked Santa’s, and she hasn’t stopped since.

“We have over 9,000 different ones right now,” Judy said.

The collection used to take up most of the space inside the Barnhardt’s home on Irish Potato Road, so they built a whole new house behind theirs to hold the entire collection. It’s accurately called “Santa House."

“We wanted people to be able to come enjoy them, as we do,” Judy said. The couple opens the Santa House for the public to enjoy, and another cause that’s very near and dear to Judy’s heart.

Judy’s mother was a hospice patient at Tucker Hospice House for 11 days. Judy, who is also a home health nurse, says the organization lifted a world of burden off of her shoulders during her mother’s final days.

“I got to spend that last special time with her being her daughter, and that’s a gift I could never repay them for,” Judy said.

Visiting the Santa House is free but guests are asked to make a gift offering if they so choose. 100% of those offerings are given directly to hospice to benefit programs and care there.

It’s something Judy is very passionate about, just like her Santa collection. She’s also very intent on people remembering the real ‘reason for the season’.

By the door as you come into the Santa House, a special cabinet holds photos and figurines of Santa posed with Baby Jesus.

“That’s what this is really all about,” Judy said.

Their collection will be open to the public December 5, 12 and 19. Hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. each of those days. The Santa House is at 1288 Irish Potato Road in Concord. Admission is free but donations are accepted. For more information you can contact Judy at 980-521-0523.
