Blog: Get ready for an overnight washout!

We have a cold front moving toward us and it will make for a wet night! The good news is that it will be falling while most of us are asleep. Hopefully that will limit many travel problems.

Here’s the scoop. The front will move into the Carolinas late tonight. Heavy rain will move through, bringing 2-4” for the highest elevations and 1-2” for the rest of us.

There could be some localized flooding. There is a Flash Flood Watch in effect until 10:00am Thursday for Avery, Ashe, Watauga, Burke and Caldwell Counties.

That heavy rain will be coupled with gusty winds and possibly even a few rumbles of thunder.

I’m not predicting power outages but this wouldn’t be a bad night to set a back-up alarm on your cell phone if you typically only use an alarm clock to wake you up – just to be on the safe side.

When you’re heading out in the morning, the rain may be completely done in the mountains and foothills. It will at least be on the way out of areas farther to the east.

There could still be some rain on your way to work and school for the Charlotte area and points east. There could also be some rain left in our South Carolina counties.

Don’t worry though. By mid-morning, the rain should be well on its way.

The second half of your Thursday will be quite nice. The sun will return and highs will be in the mid 70s.

Here’s something else to keep in mind… most of the leaves left on the trees now will likely not still be there tomorrow.

Between the heavy rain and gusty winds, many of those will come down. That could cause travel problems.

Add leaves to wet roads and reduced visibility due to heavy rain and travel could be tricky overnight. Be extra careful out there.

Fortunately, the sun will come out tomorrow.

Be safe out there!
