Man found guilty after fleeing rape trial, deputies searching for him

GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A missing Gaston County man has been found guilty after officials say he ran away from court during the middle of a rape trial.

According to Assistant Chief Williams, deputies are searching for 43-year-old Gary Simmons.

Simmons was on trial for two felony counts of statutory rape when deputies say he did not return to court Monday after the lunch break. He was out of jail on bond.

The trial got underway last week.

Simmons was arrested in November 2014 and released several months later.

Tuesday, the Gaston County Clerk of Superior Court confirmed Simmons was found guilty of rape in absencia.
