Top 3 digital holiday scams

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

There is an unfortunate side-effect of the holiday season.  Halloween had barely passed before the holiday online scammers started doing their dirty work.

WBTV Cyber Expert, and CEO of Fortalice, Inc, Theresa Payton says there are 3 top digital scams we all have to watch out for.  Two are making the rounds on email and one may show up in your social media feeds.

Below she details the scams and how to spot the red warning flags:

TOP 3 SCAMS MAKING THE ROUNDS

1.  New Chip card scam:  emails from Fraudsters that look like they are from your credit card company are asking you to click on links to provide info to get your new chip card.  the best part?  They have in the email it'll help fight fraud!  Your credit card company and banks will NEVER send you an email that asks you to click on a link and fill out personal information.

2.  Delivery package scam:  Important notice about your package will hit your in basket.  Even if you sent a package, please don't click on links or attachments in that email.  Go to the actual web page of the delivery service instead!

3  'Secret Sister' gift exchange scam:  This is making the rounds on social media.  It's old school chain letter meets digital pyramid scheme and is illegal in the US because it violates Federal lottery laws...yikes!  This scam promises social media users 36 gifts in return for sending out just one gift.  Please don't fall for this or any other scams on social media.

Are you or a loved one a victim?

If you are a victim of an internet scam, please report it to the FBI at IC3.gov and to the FTC at FTC.gov

Red Flags to Watch for:

1.  A bank or credit card company  will NOT send you an email, ask you to click on a link, and give them personal details.  Call the number on your bank statement or back of your credit card if you get an email like this.

2.  Opening attachments - just avoid doing this wherever possible

3.  Social media and email scams - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
