Handle a blustery day with tips for driving in high winds

Driving can be dangerous, and one of those dangers could be driving in hazardous weather. Sometimes it’s impossible to avoid driving in hazardous weather conditions like high winds. Driving in high winds can seem scary, but with safe driving tips from Toyota Scion of N Charlotte it can be safe and easy!

Safety tips for driving in high winds

If you’re faced with driving in high winds, it’s important to remain calm. By staying calm you can think more rationally and have a better perception of your surroundings. Instead of panicking, keep your cool and use these tips for driving in high winds.

  • Slow down! The faster you drive, the more wind will get up under your N Charlotte Scion. This is the cause of losing control or a car flipping, so it’s important to keep your speed low.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel. Be prepared for sudden gusts of wind that may try to push your N Charlotte Scion sideways. A good grip on the steering wheel will allow you to keep your vehicle continuing straight in your lane.
  • Avoid distracted driving. In addition to keeping your hands on the wheel, keep your eyes on the road and your mind focused on driving. Eliminate distractions like food, beverages and cell phones. Put your phone out of sight and out of reach so you are not tempted to use it while driving.

Drive safe in your N Charlotte Scion!

While you’re driving in high winds, it’s important to stay safe out there. Our new Scion dealership in N Charlotte wants to help you feel relaxed and safe while you’re driving in hazardous weather. From behind the wheel it’s important to stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings.

  • Beware of fallen debris in the road. High winds typically cause tree limbs, loose garbage and other debris to litter the roadways. Larger objects can cause damage to your new Scion, so it’s important to avoid hitting road debris if you can help it.
  • Avoid larger vehicles. Bigger vehicles like trucks, vans and SUVs tend to catch more wind than smaller cars. Sometimes these larger vehicles can be pushed to the side which increases the risk of a collision. It’s best to avoid driving close to these larger vehicles while driving in high winds.
  • Use defensive driving techniques. While driving in high winds, it’s best to be on alert and to obey all road rules. Abide by the speed limits, come to complete stops at stop signs and always keep a safe following distance between your N Charlotte Scion and the vehicle in front of you.

Make sure to always check the weather conditions before getting in the driver’s seat of your new Scion. If there are reports of thunderstorms or high winds, make sure to exert extra caution while driving or stay put if you feel uncomfortable.
