WASHINGTON (WNCN) - A Fort Bragg soldier was killed Thursday in Kirkuk Province in Iraq, the United States Department of Defense announced Friday.

The soldier, Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler, 39, of Roland, Oklahoma died from wounds received by enemy gunfire during Operation Inherent Resolve.

President Obama authorized U.S. Central Command to work with partner nations to conduct targeted airstrikes of Iraq and Syria as part of the comprehensive strategy to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, according to the Department of Defense’s website.
