BELMONT, NC (WBTV) - Gaston County officials confirmed Thursday that police are investigating allegations that a female teacher at South Point High School had sex with a male student.
Gaston County Manger Earl Mathers told WBTV that he alerted commissioners via email this week. Mathers said a male student claimed to have sex with a teacher. Police are now investigating.
All week, parents in Belmont have been trying to separate fact from fiction, after hearing that a teacher had an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Gaston County Police told WBTV that they are currently investigating "employee misconduct" at South Point High School that they say happened "prior to graduation in the spring of 2015." Investigators did not go into greater details.
At South Point High School, officials confirmed that a teacher resigned this week. School leaders did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding that resignation.
Brandy Mulwee lives right across the street from the school. She said her son will attend South Point High School later this year.
"I can't believe this is happening at my school," Mulwee said. "I graduated from there in 1996. Now I am hearing on Facebook that a teacher had inappropriate contact or said inappropriate things to a student."
WBTV spoke with three other parents who heard the same information. We will continue to investigate and push school leaders for answers.
