Elderly man on scooter hit and killed

Hi everyone, this is Paul Cameron at my desk in the WBTV Newsroom.

An 89-year old man on a mobility scooter, hit and killed by a car, with the driver telling police the man was obscured in sun glare.  Tonight we know the man killed was Fred Talbert, owner of Talbert’s Jewelry in Landis.   Charges against the driver are doubtful at this point.

Robert Payne has his smile back.  The Gastonia man who was shot through the cheek while sitting in his truck at a gas station, survived the bullet wound, but his teeth were shot out.  Because of a story we aired, a Lincolnton dentist took notice and Caring Dentistry has donated Payne a new set of dentures.

Tonight we’ve learned about a police plan to put illegal liquor houses out of business.  CMPD Detectives have linked four homicides and thirteen shootings to these homes and businesses that operate like a bar-- but without the license.  Many of them are in residential neighborhoods.

Pork and politics tomorrow at the annual Mallard Creek Church Barbecue—you can buy some ‘cue and press some flesh as the tradition of candidates talking to the voters continues for the 86th year.  Please pass the Brunswick stew.

Please join Molly Grantham, Eric Thomas, Delano Little and me for WBTV News at 11:00 tonight!
