BLOG: FFN Overtime Week 10

Is it just me or does it seem like the high school football season is flying by?  We are only 3 weeks from the start of the playoffs for most teams.

We have 126 schools in our area that play football and only 7 teams are still undefeated.  Charlotte Catholic, Crest, Davidson Day, East Lincoln, Pine Lake Prep, Shelby, and Metrolina Christian all still have dreams of an undefeated season and a state championship.

I have 3 observations from last week in this edition of FFN Overtime.

Metrolina Christian in the midst of their best season ever

What a 2015 it has been for the Warriors thus far.  They are off to their best start ever as they are 6-0.  Of course, they have only been playing football at the school for only 5 years, but this program has come up fast.

They have NEVER had a losing season and in 2014, they finished 8-4 and made it to the NCISAA Division 3 state semifinals.

This Warriors team is very explosive offensively as they are averaging 48 points per game behind QB Rud Yearick. The dual threat senior signal caller has thrown for a thousand yards and has rushed for 700 more.  He is also completing 65% of his passes.

The defense can hold its own as well as they are only giving up 7 points per game with back to back shutouts under their belts.

This team is certainly a major contender to win their first ever private school state title behind the only head coach they have ever had in Thomas Langley.

What is going on at Albemarle?

Things are looking pretty bleak at Albemarle as the Bulldogs are currently 2-6 on the year in football.  That's right, 2-6.

This is an Albemarle program with 5 state titles in the trophy case and 7 conference titles since 2001.

But last Friday, they did something they have NEVER done and that's lose to North Moore in football.

The Bulldogs problems start on defense where the unit is giving up 24 points per game.  The offense is only scoring 19 per contest.

At this point, Albemarle is in 6th place in the 9 team Yadkin Valley Conference.

One program that is not feeling bad for the Dogs is North Stanly.  The Comets have lost to Albemarle 21 straight times.  Their last win was in 1993.  Friday, they can end that drought as they get their rival in New London.

Can the Dogs keep the Comets from stopping that streak?  It will be very interesting.  I will be at this game on Friday.

Independence is in 1st place in the Southwestern 4A all by themselves

Before the year, Butler was the clear favorite to win this conference.  But here we are in week 10 and it is Independence in sole 1st place in the conference heading into a big game at Myers Park on Friday.

Independence had a rough start to this season thanks in part to a VERY TOUGH SCHEDULE.  No one had a tougher first 2 weeks than the Patriots as they played Mallard Creek and Scotland County.

They started 0-2 in 2 blow out losses.

Since then, they have won 5 of their next 6 games including 3 in a row as they are also 3-0 in conference play.

The Patriots control their destiny when it comes to winning the title, but it won't be easy.

Friday, they are at Myers Park who is 2-1 in conference play and need a win to stay in the race.

Then, they are at Rocky River who is 3-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play, but is playing much better football as of late as they pushed Butler to the limit this past Friday as they fell 16-14 to the Bulldogs.

Finally, the Patriots finish up with that rivalry game with Butler on November 6th.  Butler is currently 3-1 in conference and have a bye week before taking on Independence.

In a nutshell, the race for the Southwestern 4A is just heating up, but Independence is in a very good position...  FOR NOW!
