Three suspects ID'd in Locust grave, church vandalism

LOCUST, NC (WBTV) -

Nearly three-dozen grave markers were damaged when police say a vandal hit a Locust church and cemetery. Three possible suspects were identified by law enforcement Thursday, according to the Stanly County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies believe the people responsible for two Stanly county churches, are also potentially connected to vandalism at an elementary school and mailbox damages.

Damage was found at Running Creek Baptist Church along Millingport Road, in Locust,  Saturday afternoon.

Church leaders found damage in the church building and also damage to grave markers within the cemetery. They say at least 33 grave markers were damaged, destroyed or pushed over. There were several windows broken in the church’s sanctuary.

The church estimates $14,000 of damages to the grave markers and $3,000 in building damages.

Charges are pending for each of the individuals, depending on the amount of damage and level of each charge. Their names have not yet been released.
