WBTV Speak Out Editorial: After the Floods; Much Left to Do

The state of South Carolina has been through a lot in the last few months.

From the senseless killing of nine people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston…to the latest incident we've seen countless images of in recent weeks.
Unprecedented rainfall in South Carolina caused what has been dubbed the “thousand-year flood.”
People's livelihoods literally washed away.
The devastation claimed 19 lives.

Through these tough circumstances we've seen South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley take the lead in making sure residents are getting the help they need to recover.
She has also been in the forefront getting the most up-to-date information to the public.
This is a time to set aside party affiliations and give credit where credit is due.
But it's our hope the actions of the governor and state legislators don't stop there.
This tragic flooding exposed a hugely flawed system to inspect local dams.
Thousands of dams aren't even inspected at all!
Tell your state leaders there must be better funding for South Carolina's infrastructure so that dams are inspected more frequently,
and that they are maintained with better materials to keep them from failing again.
We urge legislators to make this a top priority during their next session.
