We haven't even gotten into the meat of the football season and it is just preseason in basketball, but here's an update on the Charlotte Hornets and it is a good one as they are 3-0.
Right now they are in China for a couple of games with the LA Clippers and in that first game, they won 106-94.
So much has been made about needing to score more and the Hornets have done that so far in the preseason as they are averaging 100 points per game which is 18th in the NBA so far.
Three point shooting has also been a place where this team has needed to get better and so far in the exhibition season, they are shooting 35% from downtown. That is 15th in the league.
Both stats are an improvement from last season for the team.
As far as individual stats, there are 2 players who have scored in double digits in all 3 games and that is Kemba Walker and newest Hornet Jeremy Lin.
They are both averaging 14 points per game. This has to be a great sign for coach Steve Clifford as both his point guards will have the ability to score, but what about their first assignment of dishing the ball out. Well, Kemba is averaging 5 assist per game and Lin is averaging 4. Lin has also seen time at shooting guard as well as coach plays around with the line ups trying to find the right combination.
Another player making noise this preseason is Cody Zeller. He is averaging 11 points. In their last game against the Clipper, Cody came up with a double double-- 16 points and 10 rebounds. All of that while coming off the bench.
What about some other new Hornets you ask?
1st round draft pick Frank Kaminsky is slowly finding his way. He is only getting around 16 minutes per game as he is coming off the bench. He is only averaging 6 points per game. He had a bright spot in the 2nd preseason game versus Miami when he grabbed 11 rebounds.
He came in with the rep of being a stretch power forward who could drain the three. Well, so far, he is 4 for 9 from 3 point land in the preseason.
Nicolas Batum is averaging 12 points in the 2 contest he has played in the preseason. In the last game, he started at small forward and scored 11 points. More than likely, that is the position he will start the regular season at with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist gone for 6 months after surgery on his torn labrum.
MKG is the team's defensive MVP so how has the defense fared without him? They are only giving up 90 points per game as they held Miami to only 77 points in their 2nd preseason game.
I'm not getting to excited about this small sample size, but it is very encouraging. If you have time on Wednesday morning before you go to work, take a peak at the Hornets as they take on the Clippers in China at 8 AM on NBA TV.
The team's first home preseason game will be Saturday when they host the New York Knicks.
Yep, it is almost basketball season.
