UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - One person was killed and three others were injured in a head-on crash in Union County.
The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning on Rocky River Road near Old Waxhaw-Monroe Road in Monroe.
Deputies say the driver of a car crossed the center line and slammed into an SUV traveling in the opposite direction.
Three people thrown from the car were taken to the hospital and a fourth passenger in the car died on the scene.
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Tristan Thompson.
One of Thompson's neighbors spoke to WBTV in an interview Sunday afternoon.
"I know he was a good kid, respectful kid. Every time I talk to him it was yes sir, no sir," explained Monroe resident Wesley Morris.
Rusty Hammonds said he has lived near the scene of the accident for many years, and has seen dozens of accidents. He described Sunday morning's collision as the worst wreck he has ever seen.
"When I seen that car, I didn't even want to come out here but you got to do the right thing to try to help people," Hammonds explained.
He said he isn't sure why the area is so prone to accidents other than the curve in the road that may pose a hazard to drivers.
"I think a lot of people drive it every day and they just think they know the road. They don't understand when it's a little bit damp this road's a lot different," Hammonds explained.
Investigators say careless and reckless driving contributed to the wreck, but they have not determined whether alcohol was a factor.
