MORGANTON, NC (WBTV) - A tractor trailer carrying chicken parts spilled its load in Morganton early Saturday morning, creating a slippery mess on the highway.
Police say the truck was turning off Highway 64 to the entrance ramp for I-40 eastbound when the truck's load shifted, causing the trailer to detach from the truck and fall over.
The driver of the truck was cited for careless and reckless driving. Officers say it's the driver's responsibility to ensure the load is secured.
The truck was carrying chicken parts from the Case Farms Chicken Processing plant in Morganton to a rendering plant in Wadesboro.
The spill left a large amount of chicken parts all over the roadway. Three lanes of the four-lane highway were closed for several hours while front-end loaders cleaned up the mess. Fire crews also spent time spraying cleaning solution on the road since the chicken parts and associated fluids made the road very slick.
People on scene said there was quite a smell in the area and that cars detouring around the spill had to drive through some of the fluids on the road.
