Some rough weather in the Carolinas was not enough to keep a musical legend from getting to where she needed to be so the show could go on.

Superstar Liza Minnelli performed at the Cape Fear Community College Fine Arts Center Saturday night, in front of a near sell out crowd in downtown Wilmington. But she nearly didn't make it.

According to Minnelli's rep, she had been traveling all day in rough weather when she landed in Charlotte Friday night.

"Her connecting flight from Charlotte suffered extreme turbulence on its way to Wilmington," WBTV learned. "The pilot flew back to Charlotte."

But Minnelli need to get to the coast, so she decided to take an Uber.

According to Minnelli's rep Scott Gorenstein, her driver was former Egyptian Olympic handball player Ahmed El-Awady. The 45-year-old competed at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.

So why Uber?

Gorenstein says UberXL was more convenient to arrange at that time of night. The trip took Minnelli and her two assistants nearly four hours and more than 200 miles in the Uber car.

Minnelli had to fork out $200 for the trip, but Gorenstein says El-Awady drove all night and got her to the hotel early Saturday morning.

Later that day, she played to a crowd of 1,500, who gave her a standing ovation as she performed with the North Carolina Symphony.
