GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The man accused of killing a homeless person in Gastonia is now facing a second-degree murder charge, according to officials with the Gastonia Police Department.
Authorities say 78-year-old Fletcher Campbell died more than two months after he was severely beaten with a cinder block. He was in hospice care when he died.
19-year-old Donald Wallace was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder after the July 6 beating. That charge was upgraded to second-degree murder when Campbell died.
Wallace is currently being held in the Gaston County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
