CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Jason Ray was a stand-out kid from Concord, NC, and the UNC-Chapel Hill mascot killed in 2007 during the Final Four game in New Jersey.
Sunday, UNC Hospitals is naming the Transplant Clinic in his honor.
You might remember the story - when Jason applied for his first driver's license, he checked the box to be an organ donor. Jason's organs ended up saving four men. His parents have been able to meet all four.
Since then, Charlotte and Emmitt Ray established the Jason Ray Foundation. It has a fundraiser every year -- I was honored to emcee some in the past. This year the event is in Chapel Hill. There's a dinner Sunday night and a golf tournament on Monday.
There are still some open spots to play golf: www.jasonray.org.
The reason the Hospital is naming the Transplant Clinic after their son? Because their fund has now given $1 million in seven short years.
Big hugs to Charlotte and Emmitt. What a weekend for them.
