WBTV Speak Out Editorial: Alleviate Hunger, With A Walk in the Park

“Speak Out” is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by editorial board member, Jess Sessoms.

Most of us are fortunate enough to never know real hunger.

But more families in our community than you might imagine struggle to put food on the table every day.

In fact, over 155,000 people in Mecklenburg County alone live at or below the poverty level and are at risk of hunger.

More than a third of them are children. Think about that.

How can those kids ever do well at school and break the cycle of poverty if they constantly worry about having enough to eat?

There is a simple way we can all help.

We can take part in the Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday October 18th at Independence Park.

People of all ages, faiths, cultures and circumstances join together to help those who do not have enough to eat –

both across the globe and right here in our own backyard.

The walk benefits three vitally important organizations in Charlotte that serve people in need:

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, Loaves and Fishes, and Crisis Assistance Ministry.

WBTV is proud to be a sponsor of the walk, and our own Maureen O’Boyle will serve as emcee for the festivities.

We hope you’ll join us on October 18th and help fight hunger in our community.
