Even though the Charlotte Knights lost their season finale today down in Gwinnett 6-2, it was a very successful season for the Knights in year 2 at BB&T Ballpark here in Charlotte.
On the field, the team finished the season 74-70. That is an 11 game improvement from last season. They would finish tied for 3rd in the International League South Division 4 games out of first. By the way, all 4 teams in the division won at least 74 games and no other division can say that.
The team would once again lead the IL in home runs as they belted 134. 23 of those came from Matt Davidson who would lead the IL with those 23 round trippers.
With 582 RBI, the Knights would finish 2nd in the IL in that category.
With all that offensive fire power, fans would respond to the exciting brand of baseball by filling BB&T consistently. The Charlotte Knights would lead the IL for the 2nd straight year in attendance with 669,398 fans going thru the turnstiles. They would average 9,428 per home game which also led the league.
The newness of the ballpark has worn off, but it continues to be one of the hottest tickets in town during the summer months.
Next year is setting up to be another great year for baseball here in Charlotte as BB&T Ballpark will host the Triple-A Baseball All Star Game and All Star Game Festivities on July 11-13.
The Knights open the 2016 season on the road on April 7th at Durham and will have their home opener on April 14th when they host Durham.
I can't wait until the first call of "play ball", but no offense to the Knights, I am also looking forward to a great Panthers playoff season, then a nice long Hornets playoff season. Time to put the baseball gloves away for a little while.
