BLOG: Are you ready for Butler at Mallard Creek?

Hands down, the biggest game in the state this week is Butler at Mallard Creek.

It is a meeting between 2 of the favorites to win the 4AA state title.  Butler enters as the #5 team in our FFN Top 10 and Mallard Creek is the #1 team.  The Mavericks are also ranked #7 nationally by MaxPreps.

This will be the 8th meeting all time between these 2 with the Bulldogs coming away with 4 victories.

Last year's regular season game was a classic as Butler won 28-27 after Mallard Creek missed a late extra point.  The Creek would win the playoff rematch 56-14 on their way to their 2nd straight 4AA state title.

Speaking of titles, one of these 2 programs have won 5 of the last 6 4AA titles.

But who is the favorite to win tomorrow night?

Both enter the game 1-0 after very impressive defensive performances in week 1.

Mallard Creek destroyed Independence last Saturday 58-6.  Mavericks QB James Smith had a field day as he threw for 4 TD and rushed for another 2 TD.  But it was the defense that was the most impressive.  They gave up a long TD pass in the 1st quarter and after that, they held the Patriots offense in check including shutting down a pretty good RB in Quantavious McGill.

This week, they will have the task of trying to slow down Benny LeMay.  Last Friday in a win over Olympic, the Charlotte commit had 2 TD.  With an inexperience QB in Davis Cheek, expect the Creek to try and minimize LeMay and make the Bulldogs beat them thru the air.

But don't sleep on the Bulldogs defense as they shut out Olympic 44-0.  They would come up with 4 turnovers in the 1st half (3 INT and 1 fumble recovery).  Thru 1 week of the defensive change to the 4-2-5, things look good, but this will be their toughest test of the season by far.

Who is the favorite?  I would say Mallard Creek.  I expect Butler to come out with a few tricks up their sleeves to try and get off to a fast start.

Let me throw this out there as well.  Next Friday, Mallard Creek takes on national power Byrnes in a game some are looking forward to more than this one.  Could they be overlooking tomorrow's game versus Butler?

I guess we will find out at 7PM tomorrow night at "The Creek."

I will be there.  Will you be in the house?
