Molly's Kids: 17-year-old Chris West loses his long battle with cancer

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Many of you follow and care deeply about Chris West. His mother, Michelle, says he passed away Saturday morning surrounded by family and friends.

"Chris wanted to make sure he was remembered for his kind heart and gestures and not as 'the sick kid'," Michelle wrote on his Facebook page, Chris's CREW. "He overcame many obstacles in his lengthy battle against cancer. Today he is finally free of that disease and the broken body that let him down. Heaven gained an amazing angel, and now he can... have the best seats to every game."

This past July was the third time Chris was told he wouldn't make it. Amazingly, he had kept coming back.

Chris turned 17 this past Wednesday. He received over 10,000 cards, many from his Facebook family. WBTV did a story on him just four days before he passed away.

"He loved the story Tuesday, it was beautiful," Michelle said late Saturday. "And the response to his cards blew us all away, especially him."

He was one of the most sincere souls out there, always trying to help other children battling, despite him being sick himself.

Chris touched many of us, Michelle. Huge thoughts to you right now. Our hearts are with you and your entire family.
