TEGA CAY, SC (WBTV) - Friends and family in Fort Mill are mourning the loss of a 19-year-old man who went swimming with friends Monday in Lake Wylie.
Friends said "Tee" Muhammed died while swimming at Windjammer Park in Tega Cay. Crews were finally able to find his body early Tuesday morning.
The drowning victim was an athlete, and people are still puzzled about what happened on the lake.
People who know the lake, like Matthew Allegrezza, say there's a current. "What happens is you keep getting pushed out by the waves and as you try to get across, it's farther than you think. And you're going, the waves are pushing you one direction but you're trying to get to the other and it gets overwhelming," Allegrezza said.
Allegrezza graduated from Fort Mill High School in 2014 with T Lah Kwan Khalid Muhammad, who was known to friends as "Tee."
"He went to school with me. He had a huge personality, so you can't forget him," Allegrezza said.
Friends shared videos and photos of Tee on social media. Tee Muhammad was on the football team when he was in high school. His friends say Tee always found the bright side in things and had the most contagious smile.
It's hard to understand why he couldn't make it from park to the island.
"People from time to time try to swim to the island. Some do, some make it. Some turn around and come back," explained Tega Cay City Manager Charlie Funderburk Monday. "This is the first drowning that we've had at the park in the fifteen years I've been here and it's very unfortunate."
The dive team couldn't find Tee Muhammad Monday but said he was located Tuesday, where he was reported missing.
"I've swam all around here. It's sad to think someone you know, and you'll never see them again. So, it's tough. It's a weird thing to think about especially in a place so familiar," Allegrezza said.
A memorial service will be held at Faith Assembly of God in Rock Hill on Friday at 1 pm. Friends are raising money for the family to help pay for funeral expenses: http://www.gofundme.com/gbmmuqx8
