YORK COUNTY, SC (WBTV) - Adrian "Ace" McCrorey started cutting hair in his mother's home when he was still a teenager. Now, he's reached pretty much the pinnacle of success in his business after being awarded the Steve Harvey Neighborhood Award for Best Barber in the country.
He opened his first barber shop 'Platinum Cuts' in Rock Hill in 1998.
Ace found out he won the award this past weekend at an awards ceremony at Phillips Arena in Atlanta.
"When they called out Platinum Cuts as the winner I said, 'got it!'" Ace said.
The award recognizes businesses in the African American community who work to make their neighborhoods better and give back to the community.
Ace has been hosting free back-to-school haircuts since his very first day in the business.
"My grand opening was right before the first day of school," Ace said, "I think we worked for like 12 hours cutting hair and didn't make a dime."
He says giving back to the community is a part of his brand at Platinum Cuts. A brand he doesn't plan on changing.
"Winning the award really is going to take us to a different level because people are going to want to come see what's the fuss," Ace said.
