MORGANTON, NC (WBTV) - On July 26, 1905, Ruby Clodfelter was born in McDowell County. On Sunday afternoon in Morganton, dozens of friends and dignitaries celebrated her 110th birthday. She was wearing a silk suit she sewed herself.
"Every day it gets sweeter," Clodfelter said about the 40,150 days of life she's lived.
"Unheard of," said Morganton Mayor Mel Cohen, "To see the many things that have happened in her lifetime it's just unbelievable."
Cohen is referring to the fact that Clodfelter is 110, and without many of the frailties that come with such an advanced age.
She lives independently in her own apartment at Grace Ridge Retirement Community and still does the crossword puzzle daily. She has almost perfect vision and doesn't wear hearing aids. To say she's as sharp as a tack is an understatement, because she's actually sharper.
"Eat junk food," Ruby said when she was asked what the secret was to living to be 110. She said that with a sarcastic grin, she actually credits an active mind to keeping herself young. The 110 woman is a die-hard NASCAR fan with her favorite driver being Tony Stewart.
At Clodfelter's birthday party on Sunday, she was asked for any advice she might give to young people looking to successfully navigate their way through life.
Clodfelter answered simply, "Just keep up with the times."
