CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - An attempted robbery on a taxi cab driver turned into an assault. It was near midnight when someone called for a cab at an apartment complex on Vinca Circle in East Charlotte.
When the taxi arrived, two people - a man and a woman - summoned the driver.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) Officer Tori Roddey explains, "He rolled the window down and they said, 'it's me, I called it in,' and he (the cabbie) advised them for safety reasons, 'I need you to call that number back with a valid number.'"
They did, and on surveillance from inside the cab, the female got in the back seat, then slid over to directly behind the driver.
What can't be seen on the taxi's camera is the male who stood outside the driver's window.
"The guy never gets in," Officer Roddey said. "He just sits there at the door."
The cabbie says the man pulled out a gun and demanded money.
"The cab driver had a very harsh response. He said, 'get out of my cab - and that's the nice way of saying it," Roddey said.
After the driver refused to hand over his cash, the woman in the back seat leaned forward and sprayed mace in the cabbie's face. As a reaction, the driver floors his vehicle.
"But the female is still in the cab," Officer Roddey said. "Either she fell out or jumped out but the employee, cab driver said he could hear her screaming."
The driver found someone to help him nearby and called police. They searched but couldn't locate the couple. They were, however, left with the phone number from the driver's caller ID.
"Based on what we have now," Roddey said, "The number isn't any good."
The phone was probably a burner phone and rendered untraceable.
We never got a look at the man with the gun but the woman is between 20 and 25 years old, with colored braids in her hair.
