Blog: Molly's Kids: "Timothy the Tinman" to now have open heart surgery

Editor’s note: This is about one of the #MollysKids, children WBTV Anchor Molly Grantham follows closely on her Facebook page.  It was first published there – which is why it’s written in a personal way.  For years, Molly has followed the stories of dozens of kids with uphill medical battles. Find this story (and updates on all #MollysKids) here on her Facebook page.

A beautiful picture of 7-year-old Timothy Brookshire of Lenoir with his mom, Crystal. Timothy has been a part of ?#‎MollysKids for years. Many of you guys know his story. This child is a living miracle.

Crystal found out yesterday Timothy – known as “Timothy the Tinman” – has to have open heart surgery.

He has already gone through 58 surgeries in his seven short years. Timothy was born with a disease that doctors said made him “incompatible with life.” He also has major complications with his autoimmune system AND a brain tumor. He was never supposed to walk or talk. He does both.

(WATCH HERE to see the original Timothy story from last March.)

Crystal says Timothy will have an MRI in October which will help determine when to schedule his open heart surgery. It could be by the end of the year or, maybe she says, early 2016.

Timothy has also been on steroids. His mom says he has gained 14 pounds since the last update on him in May. He’s now 67 pounds.

Tim’s dad, John, is in the military. He is stationed overseas. It’s unclear when he comes back – possibly by January of 2016?

It took my breath away when Crystal sent this picture from the doctor’s office yesterday. He looks great.

Just want to yell, “Hi, TIM!!!!”

Crystal wanted you guys to have the update. Overall, she says, her son is doing well. She remains mighty proud and says they’ll tackle this upcoming surgery the way they’ve tackled the other 58 – head-on.
