Crime Stoppers: Man shot dead at home

Crime Stoppers: CMPD looks to solve cold case

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A man was shot dead in his own home one night. Police say the killing happened over drugs. The family disagrees. They just want the killer exposed and facing justice.

"I never would have thought someone would have taken my brother's life, because he don't bother nobody," said Tameka Byers, the sister of Antoine "Twan" Byers, who died after a struggle and gunshots in his apartment on June 29, 2014.

On that night, Byers, his 23-year old son and a friend were all together. Someone came to see him. But according to police, neither Byers' son or Byers' friend knew the man.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Detective Shana Isenhour said, "we interviewed one witness. He was asleep on the couch and he did not have a lot of information to provide us because he was asleep and he woke up to the commotion of the victim and the suspect struggling."

So what was that struggle about? Detective Isenhour says Byers - who had previous drug charges - was killed because he had something somebody wanted.

"It appears they attempted to rob him of the drugs he had in the home," the detective said.

Byers' sister isn't so sure. "I don't know," she said. "I don't think so."

Although the slaying has been difficult on the Byers' family - he leaves behind five children - his sister says she'll be patient until police name a killer.

"I want him found. I wish he could have been found the same day, but it comes when it comes," Tameka Byers said. "But I'm not giving up faith because one day it'll come to the light."

Police only have a vague description to go on. There is a cash reward posted up to $5,000 dollars for information that leads to an arrest. Call 704-334-1600. Crime doesn't pay, but Crime Stoppers does.
