BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WECT) -

The Village of Bald Head Island is asking surrounding beach communities to come together to oppose House Bill 97.

The General Assembly is proposing a bill that would remove the southern portion of the historic New Inlet Dam to open it up to the Cape Fear River.

Coastal communities from Bald Head Island up to Carolina Beach are concerned for the negative impacts this change could have on the environment.

Calvin Peck, the Village of Bald Head Island Manager, said they are concerned for the alteration in the salinity regime to the Cape Fear River, the essential fish habitat, and the changes that could occur to the ecosystem.

Additionally, Peck said the river sediment transport at Oak Island, Bald Head Island, and Ft. Fisher would be negatively impacted, jeopardizing their barrier island protection.

The Town of Carolina Beach was set to discuss their stance on the bill at the town council meeting Tuesday evening.
