78-year-old homeless man gets facial surgery after assault

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) - A 78-year-old homeless man was assaulted and taken to the hospital with severe injuries to his face in Gastonia Monday night.

Gastonia police are asking for the public's help in finding the person responsible for beating Fletcher Harold Campbell with what they say appeared to be a piece of cinder block.

The assault was reported just before 11:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Garrison Boulevard. Campbell was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical center and later transferred to Carolinas Medical Center for facial surgery.

Police are looking for family members and any information in the case.
