After a 2-9 season in 2014, East Meck is in position to make some noise in 2015 thanks to a little confidence.
The last 5 years have not been too good for the Eagles. During that time, East has won only 7 games.
2014 was the first season for coaching great Barry Shuford at East. This will be his 27th year as a head coach with stops previously at Bessemer City, Garinger, Butler, Parkwood, and Olympic.
After seasons of 2-9 in 2010, 0-11 in 2011, 2-9 in 2012, 1-10 in 2013, the first thing coach did was go young. Last year, the Eagles ended up starting 4 freshmen and 6 sophomores. With that year of experience, this team should be more competitive in 2015.
They have 8 starters back on both sides of the ball and have 38 lettermen returning.
Defense was not very good for East in 2014 as they gave up 36 points per game. The D should be much better in 2015 with the return of all conference performers T.J. Elliot and Chris Allen. Both of which will just be entering their junior seasons.
Elliot has been an all conference linebacker the last 2 seasons. In 2014, he had 98 tackles.
Allen was an all conference defensive end in 2014 with 9 sacks and 58 tackles.
Even with 8 starters back on offense, that unit will still be pretty young especially at QB where Kahlil Gilliam returns for his sophomore season. Last year as a freshman, he threw for just 700 yards.
This team still may be a year away from making some big noise, but don't take these Eagles too lightly as they will be much better in 2015.
Experience breeds confidence and this team will certainly carry a lot of that into this season in the always tough Southwestern 4A Conference.
